What Claude Code actually is
Claude Code is a terminal-based tool that lets Claude read, write and navigate files on your machine. Developers use it to write and debug code. But the same file access that makes it powerful for programming makes it useful for business tasks that involve documents, data and structure.
The difference from chat: Claude Code works with your actual files. It can read a folder of meeting notes, summarize them and write the summary to a new file. It can scan a documentation folder and flag inconsistencies. It can take a spreadsheet of customer feedback and group it by theme.
Research workflows
Research produces a lot of unstructured output: browser tabs, notes, PDFs, bookmarked articles. Claude Code can read all of these, extract the relevant points and write a structured summary to a file.
You point Claude Code at a folder of research materials. Claude reads them, identifies the key themes and writes a summary document with sources cited. This turns hours of manual note-taking into a 15-minute task.
Documentation that stays current
Documentation rots when nobody updates it. Claude Code can scan your docs folder, compare it against your actual product or process and flag what is outdated. You do not need to read every page yourself.
You can also use Claude Code to generate docs from scratch. Give it access to your codebase or your process files. Claude writes the documentation, creates the file structure and keeps the tone consistent across pages.
Product planning from raw input
Product plans start as messy input: customer emails, feature requests, meeting notes, competitor observations. Claude Code can read all of these and produce a structured product backlog with priorities, dependencies and effort estimates.
This does not replace a product manager. It handles the consolidation work: reading 50 emails, grouping requests by theme and producing a first draft of the backlog. The PM reviews, adjusts and prioritizes.
